Chapter XXIV
Denis: The individual is not a self-supporting universe. There are times when he comes into contact with other individuals, when he is forced to take cognizance of the existence of other universes besides himself.
Mary: True. When one individual comes into intimate contact with another, she - or he, of course, as the case may be - must almost inevitably receive or inflict suffering.

"You won’t burn in hell. But be nice anyway" →
“No one owns being good. I’m good. I just don’t believe I’ll be rewarded for it in heaven. My reward is here and now. It’s knowing that I try to do the right thing. That I lived a good life. And that’s where spirituality really lost its way. When it became a stick to beat people with. “Do this or you’ll burn in hell.”
You won’t burn in hell. But be nice anyway.”

Higher Education
Anne: You have a bad habit of quoting. As I never know the context or author, I find it humiliating.
Denis: It's the fault of one's education. Things somehow seem more real and vivid when one can apply somebody else's ready-made phrase about them. And then there are lots of lovely names and words--Monophysite, Iamblichus, Pomponazzi; you bring them out triumphantly, and feel you've clinched the argument with the mere magical sound of them. That's what comes of the higher education.
Anne: You may regret your education, I'm ashamed of my lack of it. Look at those sunflowers! Aren't they magnificent?

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, the man who championed the notion that every man, woman, and child deserved their own personal computer, seems to be having some regrets about the culture he helped spawn. Although it’s possible some of those misgivings have to do with his buddy Steve Jobs’s failure to predict the size of the search engine market. [CNN]

“We should be encouraging young adults to drink sensibly, but to do this we need to be honest. We do regularly drink more than the government’s daily recommendation of two pints or glasses of wine and there’s nothing wrong with that. There’s also nothing...

Is that so much to ask, universe?
Let’s stay up late and watch old movies, munch on chocolate bars and cheese infested popcorn. Let’s go watch concerts, sneak our way in to theaters like puberty-hitting teenagers. Let’s go on a trip, ride a midnight bus to anywhere - I don’t care if it’s just to the next town, I just wanna sit beside you for hours and lay my head on your shoulder....
